My Child Has an IEP but Still Isn’t Improving — What Else Can We Do?

by

Getting an IEP in place often feels like the finish line after a long process of advocating for your child. So when months go by and progress still isn't showing up the way you expected, it can feel discouraging and confusing — like you did everything right, and it still isn't enough. You're not out of options, and this is more common than most parents realize.

What Does "Not Improving" Look Like With an IEP in Place?

Parents in this situation often describe a similar pattern: the IEP is being followed, the accommodations are technically happening, but grades, confidence, or specific skills like reading or math still aren't moving the way they'd hoped.

Why an IEP Alone Sometimes Isn't Enough

An IEP defines what support and accommodations a child receives at school, but it doesn't always guarantee the intensity, consistency, or individualization a specific child actually needs. Classroom-based support is often shared across a caseload of students, which can limit how targeted and frequent the instruction really is for any one child.

Signs It May Be Time to Add Outside Support

  • Progress has plateaued despite the IEP being in place for a full term or longer
  • Support at school feels inconsistent or infrequent
  • Your child still struggles significantly with the specific skill the IEP was meant to address
  • You're not getting clear, regular updates on progress from the school

How Parents Can Understand Their Child's Needs

It helps to look closely at whether the IEP is actually targeting the right skill with enough intensity. A Learning Disability Evaluation can clarify exactly where your child's specific gaps are, which helps you evaluate whether the current plan is truly matched to those needs.

Common Problems and Possible Solutions

  • "The school says the IEP is being followed." Following a plan and that plan being sufically intensive for your specific child are two different things. Extra one-on-one support outside school can fill that gap.
  • "We don't know if we should push for more school services or look outside." Many families do both — continuing to advocate at school while adding individualized outside support in the meantime.
  • "We're worried this means something more serious is going on." A lack of progress despite support in place is worth investigating further, rather than assuming nothing more can be done.

What Parents Can Do at Home

  • Request regular, specific progress updates from the school, not just general check-ins
  • Ask exactly how much one-on-one time your child is actually getting each week
  • Keep your own simple record of specific skills over time, not just grades
  • Consider whether the intensity of support matches the size of the gap

What Kind of Professional Support May Help

Our Special Needs Tutor support is built for children who need individualized, adapted instruction beyond what a shared classroom setting can typically provide, working directly on the specific skills your child needs most.

How Long Can Improvement Take?

With more focused, individualized attention, many families notice a shift in confidence and specific skills within the first several weeks, with continued progress building as consistent one-on-one sessions add up over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can outside tutoring conflict with an existing IEP?
No, outside support typically works alongside an IEP rather than against it, often reinforcing the same skill areas with more individualized attention.

Should we ask the school to change the IEP first?
It's reasonable to raise concerns with the school, though this process can take time. Adding outside support in the meantime helps avoid losing further ground.

How do we know if the issue is intensity or approach?
An evaluation can help clarify whether your child needs more frequent support, a different teaching method, or both.

Is this kind of tutoring done online?
Yes, The Learnability delivers one-on-one support fully online with trained specialists.

What age range does this support cover?
It supports a wide age range, adapted to each child's specific IEP goals and learning profile.

Conclusion and Next Step

An IEP that isn't producing the progress you expected doesn't mean you've run out of options — it usually means it's time to add more focused support. Contact The Learnability to talk through what could help your child move forward.

Can We Use Our Child’s WADE or WIST Results to Get Support at School?

by

If you've just gone through a WADE or WIST assessment with your child, you probably have a report full of scores and terms that are new to you. One of the most common questions parents ask next is simple: can we actually use this to get our child help at school? The short answer is yes — but how you use it matters. This guide walks you through exactly what to do with your results.

What Is the WADE or WIST Assessment, Again?

The WADE and WIST assessments are diagnostic tools used to measure a child's word reading, spelling, and decoding skills in detail. If you want a full refresher on what each one measures and how they're scored, we've covered that in our complete guide to WADE and WIST in the Wilson Reading System.

Why Parents Ask This Question

Most parents don't go looking for an assessment out of curiosity. They go looking because something at home or at school has already raised a flag — slow reading, spelling that doesn't match effort, frustration with homework, or a teacher comment that didn't quite add up. Once the results confirm there's a real, measurable gap, the next natural question is: now what does the school do about it?

Signs the Results Point to a School Support Conversation

Your WADE or WIST results are worth bringing to the school if they show:

  • Word reading or spelling scores that fall meaningfully below grade-level expectations
  • A pattern where your child understands language well but struggles specifically with the mechanics of reading or spelling words
  • Slow, effortful decoding even on familiar words
  • A gap between your child's classroom performance and what the assessment shows underneath it

How Parents Can Understand What the Results Actually Mean

Assessment reports are written for professionals first, which is why so many parents read their child's results and still feel unsure what to do next. Before you approach the school, it helps to get a plain-language walkthrough of what your child's specific scores mean and which skills they point to. Our Learning Disability Evaluation service includes exactly this kind of results breakdown, so you're walking into any school conversation with clarity instead of guesswork.

Common Problems and Possible Solutions

  • "The school says the scores aren't low enough for an IEP." Schools often use different cutoffs than a private assessment. A results breakdown can help you understand where your child's scores stand relative to typical school thresholds, and whether a 504 plan or informal classroom accommodations might be the more realistic first step.
  • "We don't know what to actually request." Knowing the score isn't the same as knowing the ask. Support might mean extended time, structured literacy instruction, small-group reading support, or specific accommodations tied to the skill gap the assessment identified.
  • "The results were confusing on their own." This is common, and it's exactly why pairing your results with expert guidance — rather than trying to interpret them solo — tends to lead to a more productive school meeting.

What Parents Can Do at Home Before the School Meeting

  • Bring the full written report, not just a summary
  • Write down 2-3 specific things you've noticed at home that match the assessment findings
  • Ask the school directly what their process is for reviewing outside assessments
  • Request everything in writing, including next steps and timelines

What Kind of Professional Support May Help

Whether or not the school moves quickly, structured, one-on-one intervention outside the classroom often makes the biggest difference in the meantime. If your child's WADE or WIST results point to decoding, spelling, or word-reading gaps, our Wilson Reading System program is built specifically around this kind of profile, working step by step on the exact skills the assessment measured.

How Long Can It Take to See Improvement?

Every child's timeline looks different depending on the size of the gap and how consistently support happens. Many families begin to notice more confident, accurate reading within the first several weeks of structured one-on-one sessions, with steadier gains building over a full term of consistent work.

How The Learnability Can Help

You don't have to interpret an assessment report alone or guess at what to ask the school for. The Learnability can walk through your child's WADE or WIST results with you, explain what they mean in plain language, and recommend a specific path forward — whether that's structured tutoring, a fuller evaluation, or guidance on what to bring to your school meeting. Contact The Learnability to talk through your child's results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a diagnosis for the school to act on WADE or WIST results?
Not necessarily. Many schools will review outside assessment data even without a formal diagnosis, though the process and required documentation vary by district.

What's the difference between an IEP and a 504 plan?
Generally, an IEP provides specialized instruction for a qualifying disability, while a 504 plan provides accommodations without changing instruction. Which one applies depends on your child's specific results and your school's evaluation process.

Should we get a full Learning Disability Evaluation instead of relying on WADE/WIST alone?
It depends on what the school requests. Some schools want a broader evaluation before making decisions, in which case a full evaluation can strengthen your case.

Can tutoring happen while we wait on the school's decision?
Yes, and most families do this. Waiting on a school process can take weeks or months, so starting structured support in the meantime helps your child avoid losing more ground.

What if the school disagrees with the private assessment results?
Schools can conduct their own evaluation, and outcomes can differ. Understanding your results thoroughly beforehand helps you advocate clearly if this happens.

Conclusion and Next Step

Your WADE or WIST results are a starting point, not the finish line. The real value comes from understanding exactly what they mean and turning that into a clear plan — whether that's a school conversation, a program that targets the specific gap, or both.
