Letter reversals and dyslexia are closely linked in many parents' minds, but a child who writes b for d is usually doing something very common. Most children reverse letters until about age 7, and reversals alone do not mean dyslexia. This guide explains why it happens, what is typical at each age, which signs matter more, and how to help.
Is it normal for a child to reverse letters?
Yes. Reversing letters is common in young children, especially b, d, p and q. Most children stop reversing them by about age 7, which is roughly the end of second grade, as their reading and writing improve. Most children who reverse letters before that age do not have dyslexia.
Why do children mix up b and d?
The letters b, d, p and q are the same shape turned in different directions. Young children first learn that an object stays the same object when you turn it around: a cup is a cup whichever way the handle points. Reading asks them to override that instinct, because a b turned around becomes a different letter.
That takes repetition. Until the habit settles, a child may write a letter backwards, or sometimes read a whole word backwards, such as "was" for "saw." It is a normal step in learning to read, not a sign that your child is careless.
What is typical at each age?
These are rough timelines. The trend matters more than the exact age: reversals that are fading are reassuring.

Do letter reversals mean dyslexia?
Not on their own. Some children with dyslexia reverse letters, but many do not, and most children who reverse letters are not dyslexic.
The reason is that dyslexia is not a problem with seeing letters backwards. It is a language-based difference in connecting the sounds of speech to the letters that represent them. That is why reversals matter only when they continue past about age 7 and show up alongside other signs.
Which signs matter more than letter reversals?
If reversals continue past age 7, look for these signs alongside them:
- Trouble linking letters to sounds, or sounding out unfamiliar words
- Slow, choppy reading compared with classmates
- Inconsistent spelling, such as spelling the same word several different ways on one page
- Difficulty rhyming or hearing the separate sounds in a word
- Avoiding reading, or unusual frustration with it
- A family history of reading difficulties
- Strong speaking and reasoning that seem out of step with how your child reads

How can you help your child stop reversing b and d?
- Teach one letter at a time. Work on b until it feels secure, then introduce d. Add p and q later. Do the same for numbers.
- Give a memory cue. For lowercase b, try "the bat comes before the ball": draw the straight line (the bat) first, then the round part (the ball). Or hold both fists with thumbs up. The left hand makes a b and the right hand makes a d, so together they spell "bed."
- Use touch and sound together. Have your child trace the letter in a sand or salt tray, or write it in the air, while saying its sound out loud.
- Teach one smooth stroke. Teach letters as continuous strokes without lifting the pencil, so the hand learns the shape the same way each time.
- Keep it short and playful. A few minutes a day, with praise for effort, works better than long sessions that end in frustration.
- Keep a short log. Note when reversals happen over a few weeks, and share it with your child's teacher.

When should you get an assessment?
Consider one if:
- your child still reverses letters often at the end of second grade, or past about age 7
- reversals come with other signs from the list above
- your child reads or spells well below grade level
- your child avoids reading or has started to dread it

Frequently asked questions
My 8-year-old still reverses letters. Is that a problem?
It is worth a closer look, but it is not a diagnosis. Check for the other signs listed above, talk to your child's teacher, and consider an assessment if reading or spelling is also a struggle.
Should I correct my child every time they reverse a letter?
Correct gently and without fuss. Show the right shape, have your child trace it while saying the sound, and move on. Constant correction can make a child anxious about writing.
Can eyesight cause letter reversals?
In dyslexia, reversals are not caused by seeing letters backwards. If your child squints, gets headaches or rubs their eyes when reading, a routine eye exam can rule out a vision problem.
Do number reversals mean the same thing?
Numbers like 2, 5, 6 and 9 get reversed for the same reason letters do, and the same advice applies: one at a time, with touch and sound, in short sessions.
Will my child outgrow reversals?
Most children do by about age 7 as reading and writing improve. If reversals persist, extra support helps.
