How Do I Know If My Child’s Reading Struggles Are Just a Phase?

by

Every child hits bumps while learning to read. But how do you know if what you're seeing is a normal, temporary stage, or an early sign of something that needs real support? This is one of the most common questions parents ask, usually right around the time reading starts to feel harder than it should.

What Counts as a Normal Reading "Phase"?

Learning to read is genuinely difficult, and most children go through stretches of frustration, slow progress, or reluctance at some point. A true phase tends to be temporary — it eases up with normal classroom instruction and practice, and your child keeps making steady, visible progress over the following weeks and months.

Why It's Easy to Mistake a Real Difficulty for a Phase

Reading difficulties often start out looking exactly like a normal phase — frustration, slow progress, avoidance. The difference only becomes clear over time, which is exactly why so many real difficulties get dismissed as "they'll grow out of it" for months or even years before anyone looks closer.

Signs It May Be More Than a Phase

  • The struggle has lasted several months with little to no real improvement
  • Your child actively avoids reading, or becomes upset specifically around reading tasks
  • Progress seems inconsistent — good days and bad days with no clear pattern
  • Your child is falling further behind classroom expectations over time, not catching up
  • A teacher has mentioned a concern more than once

How Parents Can Understand Their Child's Needs

Rather than waiting to see which way it goes, a clear look at your child's specific skills can settle the question. Our Learning Disability Evaluation can confirm whether what you're seeing is a typical stage or an early sign worth addressing directly.

Common Problems and Possible Solutions

  • "Everyone keeps telling us to wait and see." Waiting is reasonable for a few weeks, but if months go by with no real change, it's worth getting a clearer answer instead of continuing to wait.
  • "We don't want to overreact to something normal." A closer look doesn't have to confirm a problem — often it simply provides reassurance, or catches something early enough to make a real difference.
  • "We're not sure this is worth pursuing this young." Early support tends to be more effective and often faster than addressing the same gap later, once it's had more time to affect confidence and schoolwork.

What Parents Can Do at Home

  • Read together daily, keeping it low-pressure and enjoyable rather than a test
  • Track progress over months, not days or weeks, to spot the real trend
  • Notice whether frustration is tied specifically to reading, or shows up everywhere
  • Talk to your child's teacher about what they're seeing in the classroom

What Kind of Professional Support May Help

If the evaluation points to a real gap rather than a temporary stage, our Reading Intervention Program is built to identify and directly address the specific skills behind your child's reading struggles, before they have more time to widen.

How Long Can Improvement Take?

When a real gap is addressed early with targeted, one-on-one support, many families notice meaningful progress within the first several weeks — often faster than if the same gap were left to widen over more time.

How The Learnability Can Help

We help parents get a clear, honest answer about whether their child's reading struggles are a passing stage or something worth addressing directly, then start the right kind of support if needed. Contact The Learnability to talk through what you're seeing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should we wait before getting help?
If a few months of normal instruction and practice haven't led to steady improvement, it's a reasonable point to look closer rather than keep waiting.

Can a reading phase turn into a bigger problem if ignored?
If it's actually a real difficulty rather than a phase, waiting can allow the gap to widen and affect confidence and other schoolwork over time.

Does a single low grade mean something is wrong?
Not necessarily. A pattern over time matters more than a single data point.

Is the evaluation and program done online?
Yes, The Learnability delivers evaluations and one-on-one tutoring fully online with trained specialists.

What age is appropriate to start looking into this?
Any school-age child can be evaluated, and earlier attention generally leads to faster, easier progress.

Conclusion and Next Step

Most reading struggles resolve with time and normal practice — but not all of them do. Getting a clear answer early protects your child's confidence either way. Contact The Learnability to find out what's really going on.

My Toddler Isn’t Talking as Much as Other Kids — Should We Be Worried?

by

You're at a playdate or a family gathering, and you notice it again — other toddlers are stringing together words and phrases, and yours is still mostly pointing, gesturing, or using just a few single words. It's one of the most common worries parents bring up, and it deserves a clear, honest answer rather than a dismissive "they'll grow out of it."

What's Typical at Different Toddler Ages?

Language development varies quite a bit between individual children, and a wide range still falls within typical. That said, there are general patterns — by around 18 months, many toddlers use a number of single words; by 2, many begin combining words into short phrases; by 3, many are forming simple sentences. Falling behind these general patterns doesn't automatically mean something is wrong, but it is worth paying attention to.

Why Language Delays Happen

There are many possible reasons a toddler talks less than peers — some resolve naturally with time and exposure, while others reflect an underlying difference in how a child processes or produces language that benefits from early, targeted support. The key is not guessing which one applies, but getting a clear read on what's actually happening.

Signs Worth Paying Closer Attention To

  • Very few or no new words over several months
  • Limited use of gestures alongside limited words (pointing, waving, reaching)
  • Difficulty following simple, familiar instructions
  • Frustration or tantrums that seem tied to not being understood
  • Little interest in back-and-forth communication, even nonverbally

How Parents Can Understand Their Child's Needs

Rather than waiting to see what happens, an early look at your toddler's language patterns can give you a much clearer sense of direction. Our Learning Disability Evaluation can help identify whether language support is needed and what that should look like at this age.

Common Problems and Possible Solutions

  • "Everyone says boys just talk later." While there can be some truth to general trends, this shouldn't be the only reason to wait if you're noticing a real, sustained gap.
  • "We don't want to worry unnecessarily." A closer look doesn't have to mean something is wrong — often it simply confirms your child is on track, or catches something early enough to make a real difference.
  • "We're not sure this is even something that can be helped this young." Early language support is actually one of the most effective interventions specifically because young children's language skills are still highly responsive to targeted help.

What Parents Can Do at Home

  • Narrate your day out loud, naming what you're doing and seeing together
  • Read aloud daily, even short books, and pause to let your child fill in familiar words
  • Respond to gestures and attempts to communicate, expanding them into words
  • Avoid comparing too heavily to siblings or peers — focus on your own child's trend over a few months

What Kind of Professional Support May Help

Our Talkies Program is built specifically for younger children who need foundational language and imagery skills developed early, in a structured, one-on-one setting designed to be engaging for toddlers and young children.

How Long Can Improvement Take?

Young children's language skills are often highly responsive to early, consistent support, and many families notice new words and phrases emerging within the first several weeks of structured sessions, with continued growth as sessions progress.

How The Learnability Can Help

We help parents move past uncertainty and get a clear, age-appropriate picture of their toddler's language development, then start targeted support if it's needed. Contact The Learnability to talk through what you're noticing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it too early to worry about language delays in toddlers?
It's rarely too early to look into it. Early attention tends to lead to better outcomes if support is actually needed.

Will my toddler just catch up on their own?
Many do, but not all. If the gap persists over several months without much change, it's worth having a closer look rather than assuming it will resolve.

Is this related to autism or is it just a language delay?
Language delays can occur on their own or alongside other differences. An evaluation can help clarify what's actually going on for your specific child.

Is the Talkies Program done online for toddlers?
Yes, The Learnability delivers this program one-on-one online, adapted to be engaging and age-appropriate for young children.

What age range does the Talkies Program support?
It's designed for younger children building foundational language and imagery skills, with sessions adapted to each child's developmental stage.

Conclusion and Next Step

Noticing a language gap early and looking into it doesn't mean something is definitely wrong — it means you're giving your child the best possible chance either way. Contact The Learnability to talk through what you're seeing with your toddler.

What Is a Structured Literacy Approach, and Does My Child Need One?

by

If a teacher, tutor, or evaluation report has used the term "structured literacy," you may be left wondering exactly what that means in practice, and whether it's actually necessary for your child. Here's a clear explanation, without the jargon.

What Is Structured Literacy?

Structured literacy is a research-based approach to teaching reading and spelling that explicitly and systematically teaches the relationships between letters, sounds, and meaning. Rather than expecting a child to absorb these patterns naturally through exposure, structured literacy teaches them directly, in a clear sequence, building from simple to more complex skills.

Why Some Children Need This and Others Don't

Many children pick up reading skills intuitively through general classroom instruction and lots of reading practice. But for children who struggle with decoding, spelling, or reading fluency — often those with dyslexia or related difficulties — this intuitive approach isn't enough. They need the underlying rules taught explicitly and reinforced systematically, which is exactly what structured literacy provides.

Signs Your Child May Benefit From a Structured Approach

  • General classroom reading instruction hasn't produced steady progress
  • Your child guesses at unfamiliar words rather than sounding them out
  • Spelling remains inconsistent despite repeated practice
  • Reading feels like a constant effort rather than becoming more automatic over time
  • Your child has already been identified with dyslexia or a related reading difficulty

How Parents Can Understand Their Child's Needs

Knowing whether your child specifically needs a structured literacy approach, versus more general reading practice, is best confirmed through an evaluation rather than assumption. Our Learning Disability Evaluation can clarify exactly where the gap is and whether a structured approach is the right fit.

Common Problems and Possible Solutions

  • "We've tried general reading tutoring already." General tutoring often emphasizes practice and repetition without explicitly teaching the underlying rules — structured literacy fills exactly that gap.
  • "We're not sure our child's school uses this approach." Many classrooms use a mix of methods, and a child who needs explicit, systematic instruction may not get enough of it through general classroom teaching alone.
  • "This all sounds very technical." In practice, it simply means reading is taught in small, clear, connected steps rather than assumed to click into place on its own.

What Parents Can Do at Home

  • Ask your child's teacher directly whether structured literacy or a similar systematic approach is used in the classroom
  • Notice whether your child can explain the "rule" behind a spelling pattern, or is just memorizing words individually
  • Keep reading practice consistent, but recognize that practice alone may not close a structural gap

What Kind of Professional Support May Help

Our Wilson Reading System program is a structured literacy approach built specifically for children who need reading and spelling taught explicitly, step by step, in a clear and predictable sequence.

How Long Can Improvement Take?

Because structured literacy builds skills in a deliberate sequence, many families notice steadier, more consistent progress within the first several weeks of one-on-one sessions, with skills continuing to build on each other over the following months.

How The Learnability Can Help

We help parents understand exactly what kind of instruction their child actually needs, then deliver it through structured, one-on-one online sessions. Contact The Learnability to find out if a structured literacy approach fits your child.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is structured literacy only for children with dyslexia?
No. While it's especially effective for children with dyslexia, it can benefit any child who struggles with decoding, spelling, or reading fluency.

How is this different from regular reading tutoring?
Regular tutoring often emphasizes practice and repetition. Structured literacy explicitly teaches the underlying rules in a specific, systematic sequence.

Do we need an evaluation first, or can we start directly?
An evaluation helps confirm the fit and identify the specific starting point, which generally leads to faster, more targeted progress.

Is the Wilson Reading System done online?
Yes, The Learnability delivers this program one-on-one online with a trained specialist.

What age range is this appropriate for?
It's used across a wide age range, from early elementary through teens, adapted to each child's specific level.

Conclusion and Next Step

If general reading practice hasn't been enough, a structured literacy approach may be exactly what's missing. Contact The Learnability to find out whether it's the right fit for your child.

Is My Child Just a Slow Reader, or Do They Have Dyslexia?

by

Some kids read slowly because they're careful, cautious, or just getting there in their own time. Others read slowly because something specific is making reading harder than it should be. Telling these two apart matters, because the right response is completely different depending on which one you're dealing with.

What Does "Just a Slow Reader" Actually Mean?

A genuinely slow-but-typical reader usually reads accurately, just at a careful pace, and their speed tends to improve steadily with practice and exposure over time. There's no persistent struggle with sounding out words or remembering spelling patterns — it's simply a pace issue that resolves with time.

Why Dyslexia Gets Missed as "Just Being Slow"

Dyslexia is a language-based learning difference that specifically affects decoding — the ability to connect letters to sounds — and it often looks like slowness on the surface. Because the child isn't misbehaving or clearly "stuck," many parents and even teachers assume the child will simply catch up with more time and practice, when in fact the underlying skill gap needs targeted support to close.

Signs That Point to Dyslexia Rather Than Just Pace

  • Reading speed hasn't improved much even with consistent practice over several months
  • Your child guesses at words based on the first letter or a picture, rather than sounding them out
  • Spelling is inconsistent and doesn't reflect phonics rules they've clearly been taught
  • Reading feels effortful and tiring, even for short passages
  • There's a noticeable gap between how well your child speaks and how well they read

How Parents Can Understand Their Child's Needs

The most reliable way to know which one you're dealing with is a proper evaluation rather than watching and waiting. Our Learning Disability Evaluation can clarify whether your child's pace is a typical developmental stage or a decoding-based difficulty that needs direct support.

Common Problems and Possible Solutions

  • "We've been told to just give it time." Time alone helps typical slow readers, but it rarely closes a true decoding gap — in fact, waiting can let the gap widen as schoolwork gets harder.
  • "Our child seems smart, so this is confusing." Dyslexia has nothing to do with intelligence. Many bright, verbally strong children have significant decoding difficulties that have nothing to do with how well they think or speak.
  • "We don't want to over-worry over something normal." An evaluation removes the guesswork either way — it can confirm things are on track, or catch a real gap early, before it affects confidence and grades.

What Parents Can Do at Home

  • Track whether reading speed is actually improving month to month, not just day to day
  • Notice whether your child avoids reading aloud or reading in general
  • Ask your child's teacher directly whether the concern is pace or accuracy
  • Avoid comparing your child to siblings or classmates — focus on their own trend over time

What Kind of Professional Support May Help

If the evaluation points to a decoding-based difficulty, our Orton-Gillingham Approach is a structured, multisensory method built specifically for this profile, teaching reading and spelling in a clear, sequential way that closes decoding gaps directly.

How Long Can Improvement Take?

With a structured, targeted approach, many children begin reading more confidently and accurately within the first several weeks, with steady, compounding gains in fluency as the foundational skills solidify over the following months.

How The Learnability Can Help

We help parents get a clear, evidence-based answer instead of guessing whether their child just needs time or needs targeted support. Contact The Learnability to talk through what you're noticing with your child's reading.

Frequently Asked Questions

At what age can dyslexia be identified?
Signs can often be noticed as early as kindergarten or first grade, though children of any age can be evaluated and supported.

Does a slow reader always catch up on their own?
Many do, but not all. If speed hasn't improved over several months of consistent reading, it's worth having it checked rather than assuming it will resolve.

Is dyslexia the only reason for reading struggles?
No. Attention, language processing, and other factors can also affect reading. An evaluation helps identify which one actually applies.

Is the Orton-Gillingham Approach done online?
Yes, The Learnability delivers this approach one-on-one online with a trained specialist.

Can older children still benefit from this approach?
Yes, structured literacy approaches like Orton-Gillingham are effective across a wide age range, not just early elementary years.

Conclusion and Next Step

Waiting to "see if they catch up" is a reasonable instinct, but it's not a strategy on its own. Getting a clear answer early gives your child the best chance at reading confidently and on time. Contact The Learnability to find out what's really going on.

The Learnability is an online one-on-one learning support program built around evidence-based, structured approaches to reading and learning differences. Learn more about our approach and founder Laila Madhani on our About Us page.

Is It a Language Processing Disorder, an Auditory Processing Disorder, or ADHD?

by

Your child doesn't follow instructions well, seems to "zone out" during conversations, or struggles to keep up in class — and now you're wondering which of three very different-sounding conditions might explain it. Language Processing Disorder, Auditory Processing Disorder, and ADHD can look strikingly similar on the surface, which is exactly why so many parents feel stuck trying to tell them apart.

What Is a Language Processing Disorder?

A Language Processing Disorder (LPD) affects how a child understands or expresses language itself — making sense of what words and sentences mean, or putting their own thoughts into words. If you want the full breakdown, we cover this in detail in our complete guide to Language Processing Disorder.

What Is an Auditory Processing Disorder?

An Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) is different — it's about how the brain processes sound itself, not language meaning. A child with APD may hear perfectly well but struggle to distinguish similar sounds, follow speech in noisy environments, or process spoken information quickly enough to keep up.

Why These Get Confused With ADHD

ADHD affects attention and focus, not language or sound processing directly. But because a child with LPD or APD often looks "distracted" — missing instructions, asking others to repeat themselves, drifting off during conversations — it's frequently mistaken for an attention issue rather than a processing one.

Signs and Symptoms That Point to Each

  • Points more toward LPD: Trouble understanding multi-step directions, difficulty explaining their own thoughts clearly, vocabulary or grammar that lags behind peers
  • Points more toward APD: Difficulty in noisy environments specifically, asking "what?" frequently even with clear hearing, confusing similar-sounding words
  • Points more toward ADHD: Inconsistent attention across different settings, difficulty with focus even during quiet, low-distraction tasks, impulsivity beyond just missed instructions

How Parents Can Understand Their Child's Needs

Because these three conditions can overlap and even co-occur, guessing from symptoms alone is genuinely difficult, even for experienced parents. A Learning Disability Evaluation can help clarify which processing or attention profile actually fits your child, rather than leaving you to piece it together from behavior alone.

Common Problems and Possible Solutions

  • "We assumed it was ADHD, but treatment didn't fully help." This is one of the most common patterns we see. When language or auditory processing is the real underlying issue, attention-focused strategies alone often fall short.
  • "Our child was already diagnosed with ADHD — could there be more going on? Yes, LPD and APD can co-occur with ADHD. A fuller evaluation can determine whether additional support is needed alongside existing treatment.
  • "We don't know which specialist to even start with." An evaluation is the fastest way to get a clear answer and a specific direction, instead of trying multiple approaches by trial and error.

What Parents Can Do at Home

  • Notice whether difficulties happen more in noisy settings (possible APD) or across all settings equally (possible LPD or attention-related)
  • Break instructions into one step at a time and see if that changes the outcome
  • Keep a simple log of when and where the struggles show up most
  • Avoid labeling behavior as "not listening" — note the pattern instead and bring it to a specialist

What Kind of Professional Support May Help

Once you know which profile actually fits, targeted support makes a much bigger difference than general strategies. Our Talkies Program supports younger children building foundational language and processing skills, while our Special Needs Tutor support is built for children who need individualized, adapted instruction across broader learning needs.

How Long Can Improvement Take?

Timelines vary depending on which profile is involved and how it's addressed, but many families notice a meaningful reduction in day-to-day friction — fewer repeated instructions, better follow-through — within the first several weeks of targeted, one-on-one support.

How The Learnability Can Help

We help parents move past the guesswork between LPD, APD, and ADHD, starting with a clear evaluation and a support plan built around what's actually going on for your child. Contact The Learnability to talk through what you're seeing.

About The Learnability and Founder Laila Madhani

The Learnability is an online one-on-one learning support program built around evidence-based approaches to language, processing, and attention-related learning differences. Learn more about our approach and founder Laila Madhani on our About Us page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a child have more than one of these at the same time?
Yes, overlap is common, which is part of why a full evaluation is more reliable than trying to identify just one from symptoms.

Does a hearing test rule out an Auditory Processing Disorder?
No. APD is about how the brain processes sound, not whether the ears detect it, so a normal hearing test doesn't rule it out.

Should we get an ADHD diagnosis reconsidered if support isn't working?
If strategies aren't helping as expected, it's worth exploring whether a processing disorder is also present, rather than assuming the original diagnosis was wrong.

Is this evaluation done online?
Yes, The Learnability conducts evaluations and programs online, one-on-one with a trained specialist.

What age should we start looking into this?
Earlier is generally better, but children of any school age can benefit from clarifying which profile fits and starting targeted support.

Conclusion and Next Step

LPD, APD, and ADHD can look alike on the outside, but they call for different kinds of support. Getting a clear answer, rather than guessing, is the fastest path to actually helping your child. Contact The Learnability to start with a proper evaluation.
