My Child Was Just Diagnosed with a Reading Disability — What Do I Actually Do in the First Week?

You have the report in hand now. Maybe you feel relief that there's finally an explanation, maybe you feel overwhelmed by the terminology, maybe both at once. Whatever you're feeling, the practical question is usually the same: what do I actually do right now? This isn't a deep dive into causes or theory — it's a clear, first-week plan.

Day One: Read the Full Report, Not Just the Summary

It's tempting to skim to the conclusion, but the detailed sections of an evaluation report usually contain the most useful information — the specific skills tested, where your child scored relative to expectations, and any notes about severity or contributing factors. Keep this report somewhere accessible, since you'll likely reference it again with a school or specialist.

This Week: Write Down Your Own Observations

Before the evaluation, you were noticing things at home that led you here in the first place. Write these down now, while they're fresh, alongside the formal results. This combined picture — professional results plus your own day-to-day observations — will be genuinely useful in any future conversation about support.

Signs and Symptoms Worth Documenting

• What specifically happens during reading or homework time — avoidance, tears, specific types of errors
• How long these patterns have been present
• What's already been tried, and what happened as a result
• How your child talks about their own reading — frustration, embarrassment, or otherwise

How Parents Can Understand What the Diagnosis Means

If anything in the report is unclear, it's worth going back to whoever conducted the evaluation and asking directly. Specifically ask what skills were tested, where the difficulty specifically shows up (decoding, spelling, fluency, comprehension), and what they would recommend as a next step. A good evaluator should be able to answer this clearly, not just hand you a score.

Common Problems and Possible Solutions in the First Week

A common mistake in the first week is either freezing (not sure where to start, so nothing happens for a while) or rushing into the first available option without checking fit. Neither serves your child well. The more useful approach is a short list of concrete next steps, tackled over the following days rather than all at once.

What Parents Can Do This Week

• If pursuing school accommodations: request a meeting with the school to discuss the evaluation and whether an IEP or 504 Plan process should begin
• If pursuing outside support: reach out to a specialist provider to discuss the specific results and what kind of program would fit
• Either way: talk to your child in simple, reassuring terms — something like, "we found out exactly what's making reading hard, and now we know how to help" — rather than leaving them to wonder what the diagnosis means about them
• Avoid making several major decisions on day one. A clear plan over the first week beats a rushed decision made in the first hour

What Kind of Professional Support May Help?

This depends on the specific results in your child's evaluation, but for most reading disabilities, structured, explicit instruction — such as our Reading Intervention Program or specific approaches like Orton-Gillingham — addresses the underlying skill gaps directly, rather than working around them.

How Long Can Improvement Take?

This varies by the severity of the difficulty and how consistently support is delivered, but many families begin to see meaningful movement within the first few months of consistent, targeted instruction. The first week isn't about seeing results yet — it's about getting the right plan in motion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to decide on a specific program right away?
No. The first week is about understanding the diagnosis and gathering options, not committing immediately.

Should I tell my child's teacher right away?
Generally, yes, since the school may need to be involved for accommodations, and teachers can offer helpful classroom-level insight too.

How do I explain this diagnosis to my child?
Keep it simple and reassuring, focusing on the fact that you now know how to help, rather than framing it as something wrong with them.

Do I need to pursue an IEP immediately?
Not necessarily immediately, but it's worth starting the conversation with your school if you think accommodations will help.

Can outside support and school accommodations happen at the same time?
Yes, many families pursue both together, since they serve different purposes.

Conclusion and Next Step

A diagnosis can feel like a lot to absorb all at once, but you don't need to have everything figured out this week — just the next right step. Contact The Learnability to talk through your child's results and what comes next.
